School dramas

In Hungary and Transylvania (Siebenbürgen) between the 1550s and 1792, the world of drama was represented by the school. The multi-act dramas written by the teachers in Latin, German and Hungarian were performed by the students of the given grammar school on the occasion of the opening and closing of the school year, the celebration of the patron saint and church holidays. The Baroque school dramas were not primarily for enjoyment, but taught history, theology, philosophy, linguistics and mythology in a way that was understandable to everyone, yet in a high literary and musical style, they educated them to take a courageous stand and strengthened the students' sense of patriotism. The volume School Dramas presents the Hungarian, secondary and primary school culture of the 16th-18th centuries, including the stage and musical life, its secular patrons, its contemporary function and its applicability in 21st-century education. All of these are performed by the Bolgod Özséb Theatre Company, which has been operating continuously at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Piliscsaba since 2002, with plays that can be viewed via QR code as an appendix to our volume. In addition to the aforementioned historical plays, the play The Old Woman's Mock by Borka Kertsó and György Deák (Kanta, 1773) and the educational comedy László Garabontzás (Vác, 1775) by Imre Hagymási can be seen. The inseparable songs and instrumental interludes, as well as the sung biography of Christ and history, are performed in this audio appendix by the teachers and students of the Department of Folk Music of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music (Budapest).
