Large Hungarian dictionary

The Great Hungarian Landscape Dictionary is a monolingual dictionary with source code for a wide range of people. In addition to the words used in some parts of the Hungarian-speaking world, especially in the language of the elderly, the explanatory data of archaic, extinct or endangered vernacular and landscape language words. Gathering from 20 regional landscape dictionaries, 2 general Hungarian landscape dictionaries, a language atlas and 2 Hungarian interpretive dictionaries, the Great Hungarian Landscape Dictionary provides 55,000 real, semantic and formal words and explains more than 70,000 meanings. The collection presents the almost completely extinct peasant world and the typical work processes, objects and activities of the marginalized peasant farming. Through its vocabulary, the dictionary gives a colorful picture of the everyday life of the past, village occupations, farming, animal husbandry, horticulture, forestry work, fishing, and home industry. It provides an insight into the way of collecting forest and field plants, the world of folk medicine. It enriches our knowledge of the word and concept treasure of folk nutrition and local folk costumes. The Great Hungarian Dictionary also contains the vocabulary of former beliefs and superstitions. Therefore, the dictionary is a knowledge of the cultural history of the past centuries and an encyclopedia of Hungarian national culture. The Great Hungarian Landscape Dictionary reveals the landscapes of several dialect areas - almost completely covering the Carpathian Basin - together. The processed sources have been published for more than a century, so the Great Hungarian Dictionary can also be considered a kind of historical, diachronic dictionary of the vocabulary of the Hungarian language. Due to the fact that it is a source marker, all language elements and words can be retrieved in the original source, so it can be the starting point for further word research. It presents the territorial diversity of the Hungarian folk and landscape language with a broader immersion than in the previous landscape word collections. It can be an additional tool for studies that reveal the territorial diversity of the naming of a concept, object, living thing, or action. The dictionary can be used to enrich vocabulary and expand individual vocabulary.
